Maintaining a busy work life and looking after the family at the same time gets very stressful which is why it’s important to take a holiday once in a while. The only problem is, raising a family is also expensive and it’s difficult to fit travel into that budget. But it would be a shame to miss out on the annual family holiday because travel is so beneficial for the kids as well. It’s a great opportunity for them to experience other cultures, learn tolerance and maybe even pick up some new language skills. Kids that travel regularly are more likely to turn into well rounded adults so it’s important that you take them on regular trips, but how are you going to afford it?
Sell Some Stuff
It’s amazing how quickly you build up stuff around the house, especially when you’ve got kids. It usually just gets put in a drawer somewhere or lost under the bed but if you take the time to go through the house you’ll find plenty of old toys or electronics that you don’t need anymore and some of it will be worth quite a bit. If you sell your laptop or macbook when you get a newer model, you could get over £100 for it. One sweep of the house can easily make you enough money to cover your spending while you’re on holiday and it’ll clear a load of clutter out of the house as well.
Pay In Installments
When you’re trying to save money every month it can be difficult to stick to and if you don’t meet those goals, you won’t be going away anywhere. You can get around that by paying monthly for the holiday instead. Most travel agents offer a monthly payment option which makes it a lot easier to keep up payments. When you’re just saving off your own back, there aren’t any consequences but if you owe that money to somebody else, you won’t have the option of missing payments.
If you are going to try to save up the money for yourself, you need to be strict with yourself and put it away in a separate account as soon as you get paid. The easiest way to do it is to work out how much you can afford to put aside each month and set up a direct debit so it goes out of your bank account and into the savings right away. That way, you can’t accidentally spend all the money before putting it aside and you can’t come up with excuses as to why you can’t save any this month.
Find Cheap Deals
There are so many great places that you can find cheap holiday deals that you can actually afford. One of the best ones is lastminute.com; you can just put in the dates when you want to go away and it’ll bring up all the deals that are available. You might have to compromise on the places you want to go sometimes but you’ll save a lot of cash.
Fitting family holidays into your budget can be a struggle but don’t give up just yet. With a bit of hard work, you can manage it.
