So I think it’s safe to say that it is officially spring time and time to peg out!
There is nothing more tranquil than watching clean washing waft in the breeze and I just love that first wash you can finally hang out after a winter of wet washing dampening the air indoors or trying to hear the television over the constant drone of a tumble drier – the perfect reason to peg out.
So for today I wanted to encourage you all (if the weather is nice enough) to enjoy a peg out session with me.
IT SAVES YOU LOADS OF MONEY.
Even the most economical tumble driers are an additional drain on your home’s energy consumption so using the fresh air is going to save you lots of money to spend on more fun things than just drying your clothes. I know during the summer months our electricity bill goes down anyway because we’re not using central heating but not using the tumble dryer is a further saving I love to make. So whether its a retractable reel, a whirly gig or a bit of old rope kids of person – get pegging and save yourself some pennies.
2. IT SAVES YOUR CLOTHES (SO SAVES YOU EVEN MORE MONEY!)
Tumble dryers might make you think that they’re making your clothes softer but what they’re actually doing is weakening the fibres of the fabric. And all the fluff inside the lint collector near the door? That’s the fabric of your clothing actually wearing away. When people say they like to buy better quality clothes because they last longer this is because they have a higher thread count so the fabric is much denser and therefore wears away slower. However gradually this is, it doesn’t happen anywhere near as quick if you peg it out.
3. IT IS SAFER
Across the media in recent months is the liability of some brands of tumble dryers catching fire.
Many of the companies whose driers are affected are hiring extra engineers to deal with fixes and repairs which is planned to take months. In the mean time, simple don’t take any risks if yours is one of these and just hang outside.
4. IT USES ZERO CHEMICALS
The sun is a natural whitener so when you put wet white sheets or clothing onto a line, it will fade any stains naturally so no need for bleach or chemically filled dryer sheets.
5. AND IT IS THERAPEUTIC.
I really do enjoy hanging out washing, taking my time, smelling the cleanliness, feeling the breeze on my face, watching the sheets flap about, then noticing what else I can hear: the birds tweeting, faint traffic noise in the distance, a lawn mower further down the street and feel the grass between my toes, the soil still a little sticky on my soles.
If you really still need to use an indoor tumble dryer, try out dryer balls instead. They speed up the drying process, reduce static and are reusable too.
