I am delighted to host a guest post from Emma Drew who blogs over at EmmaDrew.info Cleaning is one of those necessary evils that we all have to do, but it can be hard to get motivated, or to find ways to save money with cleaning. Here are Emma’s top 5 cleaning hacks that will get you motivated, save you time and save you money.
Get motivated by watching other people’s mess (or watching them clean)
Whenever I need to clean, but I really, really do not have the motivation, I turn to YouTube. There are two types of videos that really get me motivated – either watching something like Hoarders, where people live in appalling, filthy conditions, or a “clean with me” video, where someone films themselves cleaning their kitchen, bedroom, bathroom, whatever. It sounds crazy, but there are loads of videos to choose from.
Put all your cleaning products in one place
Getting motivated to clean is hard enough, and if you are having to search high and low for your cleaning products, that’s just another obstacle (or excuse) in your way. Most of our cleaning products are all in one place (apart from designated bathroom cleaning products). We also have a caddy so that we can easily get everything out from under the kitchen sink at once. I’m not sure about you, but sometimes even the thought of having to rummage around looking for cleaning products is enough to stop me from making a start!
Remove pet hair easily
If you have any furry friends, then you will know the daily battle that pet hair provides. There are specialist vacuums designed for pet hair, though they can be expensive (yes, Dyson animal, I’m looking at you!)
There are a few quick and easy ways to remove pet hair when you don’t want to get the vacuum out.
You can use a squeegee to easily remove pet hair on carpets, rugs or even furniture just by running it along, with a little bit of force. You will be amazed at how much pet hair it picks up! Alternatively, you can wear rubber gloves and run your hands over prime pet hair locations. Of course, there is also the cellotape method to remove pet hair from your clothes or smaller surfaces.
This tumble dryer hack will save you time and money
On average, it costs 50p per load of washing in the tumble dryer. For those times where you must use your tumble dryer, putting a clean, dry towel into the load will help to dry the washing quicker. Saving time and money! I have more tumble dryer money saving hacks on my blog.
Consider hiring a cleaner
Earlier this year, we made the decision to hire a cleaner. She comes once a week for an hour. This is just enough time to give our kitchen, dining area and living room a good once over. I cannot even begin to tell you how amazing this has been! My husband and I are both busy with blogging, YouTube and our new reselling business. This means that cleaning often got pushed to the bottom of the pile. Our cleaner works fast and efficiently – it would take us at least double the amount of time that she takes. We can use that hour more productively. It has also made a massive difference to my mental health, and our own abilities to keep the house tidy. If your budget allows it, or you can make more money using that hour for something else, then I would highly recommend it.
