There’s nothing more that I would love for my boys than for them to experience a white Christmas. There really is nothing more magical! However the likelihood of them waking up in their own beds to a thick blanket of fresh snow outside on Christmas day is less likely than ever. This makes me sad but I’m not one for giving in, so here’s where we just have to be a little creative.
Although unlikely in England, there are plenty of places which pretty much guarantee snow in December. That’s because they often rely on it for winter sports. Fortunately my top five places to visit also have really short flights, making them perfect for trips with children.
Having visited Iceland four years ago, I can highly recommend a trip to Reykjavik with trips out to see more of the landscape. In winter you’ll find there’s only a few hours of sunlight during the middle of the day but this won’t spoil your fun. Daytime activities include snowmobiling which is lovely to do as a family. All overcoats and warm accessories are provided so no need to worry about getting a chill.
Obergurgl is one of Austria’s most famous and most sought-after ski resorts. Set high at the end of the picturesque Ötz Valley, the village centre benefits from having no through traffic at all which makes it fabulously safe for little ones. Take a visit to Cross Point restaurant at Hochgurgl which has a motorcycle museum within it and stop off to admire the ice sculptures.
You don’t have to be a skier to enjoy the slopes in Gressony. Set amongst three valleys, travel by cable car for the most superb view over the snow covered landscapes. You’ll even be able to go hunting for Father Christmas himself!
Saas-Fee is home of the extraordinary Ice Pavilion. Definitely one for more able bodied children as there are lots of stairs to climb or take the train up to the revolving restaurant to check out the Ice Pavilion. There you will experience a spectacular viewing point of the Matterhorn!
Thick white snow as far as the eye can see in the French Alps, known for its snow capped mountains and only a few hours flight from most places in the UK. Not limited to skiing, there are plenty of centres where you can try out winter and family friendly activities such as parasailing and paragliding. Or of course, you can perfect your snowman building skills 😉 The perfest place to guarantee a white christmas.
