When I was 16 my mum got a side hustle working on the 2001 Census and let me help her. It was extra money in her pocket and a few might have come my way too for helping out. It wasn’t a difficult job to do, didn’t require a lot of thinking and it was a great way to increase my daily step count!
What is the 2021 Census?
The Census is a survey that is sent to every household in England and Wales. It’s not just a headcount like it was back in the 1800’s! The Census captures all sorts of demographic information about income levels, education, employment amongst other things which can then help the government to plan and fund services in your local communities. It also provides some valuable insights into how trends have changed over time as it is completed every 10 years.
When is the next Census Day?
The next Census Day is due to be held on Sunday 21st March 2021.
So how can I make money from the 2021 Census?
They’re recruiting a range of fixed-term jobs, from managers and supervisors who co-ordinate activities, to officers who help the public complete questionnaires. A variety of full-time and part-time opportunities are available on a fixed-term basis. All roles require the flexibility to work evenings and weekends.
What skills will I need?
Customer service skills are key to these roles. I remember the grief that my mum got from some residents complaining about the expense of the Census, saying they wouldn’t respond and general comments about the government. Having the resilience to laugh off comments or show compassion where appropriate is really important.
Where can I sign up?
The 2021 Census team is hiring 30,000 temporary roles. Click here to apply.
